Calculate How Much Asphalt You Need

Asphalt is sold by the ton, not the cubic yard. Enter each area’s length, width, and compacted depth to get tonnage directly, with a waste allowance built in. Results update as you type.

Sets the compacted density used to convert volume into tons. Confirm the mix design density with your plant.

Most paving crews add 5–10%. Use the high end on small or irregular areas.

How Much Area Does a Ton of Asphalt Cover?

Coverage per ton depends entirely on compacted thickness. The values below are for standard hot mix asphalt at 145 pounds per cubic foot — doubling the depth halves the area a ton will cover.

Compacted DepthSq Ft per TonTypical Application
1 inch166 sq ftThin overlay or leveling course
1.5 inches110 sq ftTypical resurfacing overlay
2 inches83 sq ftResidential driveway surface course
2.5 inches66 sq ftLight-duty parking areas
3 inches55 sq ftFull-depth residential driveway
4 inches41 sq ftCommercial lots and light truck traffic
6 inches28 sq ftHeavy truck and industrial pavement

How much asphalt do I need?

Measure the length and width of the area in feet and decide on a compacted depth in inches. Multiply length × width × (depth ÷ 12) to get cubic feet, multiply by the mix density in pounds per cubic foot, then divide by 2,000 for tons. Hot mix asphalt compacts to about 145 lb/ft³.

Worked example: a 50 × 20 foot driveway at 3 inches compacted is 250 cubic feet, or 36,250 pounds — about 18.1 tons before waste. With a 7% allowance, order roughly 19.4 tons.

How thick should asphalt be?

Residential driveways typically use 2 to 3 inches of compacted surface course over 6 to 8 inches of compacted aggregate base. Commercial lots that carry delivery trucks generally need 3 inches of surface over a 2-inch binder course.

No single lift should exceed about 3 inches compacted, so anything thicker is placed in multiple passes. Enter each lift as its own area in the calculator above to get the total tonnage for the job.

Common Questions About Asphalt Quantities

How do you calculate how much asphalt you need?

Multiply length × width × (compacted depth ÷ 12) to get cubic feet, multiply by the mix density in pounds per cubic foot, then divide by 2,000 for tons. Hot mix asphalt compacts to about 145 lb/ft³, so a 1,000 square foot driveway at 3 inches deep is roughly 18 tons. This calculator runs the conversion, sums multiple areas, and adds a waste allowance.

How many tons of asphalt are in a cubic yard?

Compacted hot mix asphalt runs about 1.96 tons per cubic yard at 145 lb/ft³. Binder and base course is slightly heavier at roughly 2.0 tons per cubic yard, while porous asphalt and recycled asphalt pavement are lighter at about 1.76. Asphalt is sold by the ton, so tonnage is the figure to quote from.

How much area does a ton of asphalt cover?

One ton of hot mix asphalt covers about 83 square feet at 2 inches compacted, roughly 55 square feet at 3 inches, and about 41 square feet at 4 inches. A thin 1.5-inch resurfacing overlay stretches to around 110 square feet per ton.

How thick should an asphalt driveway be?

Residential driveways typically use 2 to 3 inches of compacted surface course over 6 to 8 inches of compacted aggregate base. Commercial lots need about 3 inches of surface over a 2-inch binder course. Heavy industrial pavement can run 6 inches or more, placed in multiple lifts since no single lift should exceed roughly 3 inches compacted.

How much does a ton of asphalt cost in 2026?

Hot mix asphalt generally runs about $100 to $200 per ton delivered in 2026, with most markets near $130 to $160. Installed driveway work is more often quoted at $7 to $15 per square foot depending on thickness, base prep, and access. Recycled asphalt is much cheaper at roughly $12 to $35 per ton.

Why should you add a waste factor to an asphalt order?

Real jobs lose material to irregular edges, thickness variation over an uneven base, truck cleanout, and the cooling window at the end of a load. Most paving contractors add 5 to 10 percent, and more on small or oddly shaped areas. Running short mid-pour creates a cold joint, so ordering slightly long is standard practice.

Asphalt quantities are estimates based on the compacted densities shown and the dimensions entered. Actual tonnage varies with mix design, aggregate gradation, moisture, and achieved compaction. Confirm density and coverage with your plant or supplier, and order extra material to avoid a cold joint mid-pour.
