MGD to GPM Converter: The 1,440-Minute Day
Put a plant's million gallons per day and a pump's gallons per minute on the same flow line before anyone treats them as two plants.

Book a DemoHow the MGD to GPM Converter Uses 1,440
This MGD to GPM converter follows one line on the Florida DEP operator conversion table, revised February 2014: 1440 min = 1 day. A gallons-per-day change that never uses the million stays on the GPM to GPD converter. Multiply million gallons per day by 1,000,000, then divide by 1,440. The reverse multiplies gallons per minute by 1,440 and divides by 1,000,000.
Million gallons per day, or gallons per minute. Not a dose.

What Is the MGD to GPM Converter Using?
The printed pair is 1,440 minutes in one day. A million gallons in that day, divided by those minutes, is gallons per minute. The result is a unit change. It does not say which pump to buy, how much chemical to feed, or whether a plant passed a permit.
1,440 from the day line
The conversion table prints 1440 min = 1 day. It also prints 60 min = 1 hour and 60 sec = 1 min. This page uses only the 1,440. It does not rebuild the day from the two 60s, even though those lines are on the same sheet.
The feed-rate formula on that sheet already writes flow as MGD. That is why the million is in this tool. A ticket that is already in gallons per day does not need the million. That ticket belongs on the GPM to GPD converter, which multiplies or divides by 1,440 and stops there.
Worked examples
Each row is the same division. One million gallons per day divided by 1,440 rounds to 694.4444 gallons per minute at four decimals. Half a million is half of that quotient. The reverse of 1,440 gallons per minute is 2.0736 million gallons per day. One hundred gallons per minute times 1,440, divided by 1,000,000, is 0.144 million gallons per day.
| Case | MGD | gpm |
|---|---|---|
| 1 MGD | 1 | 694.4444 |
| 0.5 MGD | 0.5 | 347.2222 |
| 1,440 gpm | 2.0736 | 1440 |
| 100 gpm | 0.144 | 100 |
A flow is not a dose
The chemical feed page multiplies a dose by million gallons per day and by 8.34, then divides by purity. That product needs a dose. This MGD to GPM converter does not ask for one. Pounds of water, when the ticket is a weight, are the gallons to pounds of water converter. Daily chemical pounds stay on the chemical feed rate calculator.
What to write on the job ticket
Write five lines before the number leaves this page. A later visit should not have to guess which day length produced the gallons per minute.
- The entered value, and whether it was million gallons per day or gallons per minute.
- The factor 1,440, named as the Florida day line, and the million in MGD.
- Both results, million gallons per day and gallons per minute.
- Which meter or which plant sheet the flow came from.
- A note that no dose, no purity, and no pump size were calculated.
What stays off this unit change
Cubic feet per second is a different factor on a different page. Acre-feet are a volume, not a minute rate. A backwash rate in gallons per minute per square foot needs an area this page does not collect. Leaving those inputs off is the difference between a unit change and a design.
A water treatment dealer who saves the 1,440 note will not re-argue the minute rate on the next visit. This conversion does not size a well pump and does not say the plant passed a discharge rule. The lab sheet that named the flow still belongs with the well water testing guide when the sample is a private well rather than a plant meter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the MGD to GPM converter change?
It converts million gallons per day and gallons per minute using 1,440 minutes in a day. Florida's operator conversion table prints 1440 min = 1 day. The same sheet writes flow as MGD on the feed-rate line. The tool multiplies by 1,000,000 and divides by 1,440, or the reverse. It does not dose a chemical.
Is 1 MGD the same as 1,440 gallons per day?
No. One million gallons per day is 1,000,000 gallons in a day. Dividing by 1,440 minutes gives gallons per minute. The GPM to GPD converter stops at gallons per day. This page uses the million.
Does the Florida sheet print 694 gallons per minute?
No. The fetched sheet prints 1440 min = 1 day. It does not print 694. One million divided by 1,440 is the quotient this tool shows. It is not a second factor copied from another line.
Is this the chemical feed rate?
No. A feed rate on the same sheet is a dose times million gallons per day times 8.34, divided by purity. This page does not ask for a dose or a purity. It only changes MGD and gallons per minute.
Does the result size a pump?
No. Gallons per minute from this division is a unit change. It is not a well yield, a backwash rate, or a pump selection.
