Pavers Per Square Foot and Waste by Pattern
How many pavers per square foot
Paver count per square foot is set by the face size, adjusted slightly by joint width. Larger formats use far fewer pieces and go down faster, but they are less forgiving — a large slab telegraphs every dip in the base, so a flat, well-compacted base matters more as the format grows.

Waste allowance by laying pattern
Waste is driven by how many perimeter pieces have to be cut, and diagonal cuts waste more than square ones. The shape of the field matters more than most people expect: a curved edge will waste more material than choosing herringbone over running bond.

The base is the job — not the pavers
Nearly every failed paver installation failed in the base, not the surface. The structural layer is compacted crusher run — a graded stone-and-fines mix that locks together and drains — placed in lifts and compacted, typically 4 inches under a patio or walkway and 8 inches or more under a driveway. On top of that goes about 1 inch of coarse bedding sand or clean chip screenings to set the pavers. Deep loose sand as the whole base is the classic mistake: it cannot be compacted to carry load, so the surface ruts and settles within a season. - Confirm the supplier's actual paver dimensions — nominal and laid sizes differ, and a 1/4-inch difference compounds across a large field
- Ask whether pavers are sold by the piece, the layer, or the full pallet, since pallet quantities rarely match your exact count
- Order all pavers in one batch from one production run — color varies between runs and a later top-up will not match
- Keep a few spares after the job for repairs rather than returning every extra piece
- Check local requirements for drainage and permeable surfaces before finalizing the build-up

Measure the area in square feet
Measure the length and width of the paved area in feet and multiply them. Break irregular shapes into rectangles and add them together rather than averaging, and measure the finished paved footprint, not the excavation.
Find the coverage of one paver
Add the joint width to the paver's length and width in inches, multiply the two figures, and divide by 144 to get square feet per paver. A 4-inch by 8-inch paver with a 1/8-inch joint occupies about 0.233 square feet.
Divide to get the paver count
Divide the total square footage by the square feet per paver. This is the exact-fit count, before any allowance for cutting, and it assumes no pattern losses.
Add a waste allowance for cuts
Add 5 percent for straight running-bond or stack-bond layouts, 10 percent for a 45-degree herringbone where every perimeter piece is a diagonal cut, and 15 percent for curved or irregular edges. Curves waste more than the pattern choice does.
Size the base and bedding layers
Allow 4 inches of compacted crusher-run base for a walkway or patio, 8 inches for a residential driveway, and more over poor subgrade. Add about 1 inch of bedding sand on top, and add 10 to 20 percent to the base volume for compaction loss.
Add edge restraint and jointing sand
Measure the perimeter in linear feet for edge restraint, which is what keeps the field from spreading under traffic. Estimate polymeric sand at roughly 75 to 100 square feet per 50-pound bag for narrow joints.

How do you calculate how many pavers you need?

Add 10 to 20 percent to the base volume for compaction, since aggregate loses volume when it is rolled.
Do I need edge restraint and polymeric sand?
Yes on both counts for almost every installation. Edge restraint runs the full perimeter of the field and is what stops pavers migrating outward under traffic — without it the edges spread and the joints open within a season or two. Polymeric sand fills the joints and hardens to resist washout and weeds; coverage runs roughly 75 to 100 square feet per 50-pound bag for narrow joints, less for wide joints or thick pavers. Should I use sand or crusher run under pavers?
Both, in layers, and not interchangeably. Compacted crusher run — a graded mix of stone and fines — is the structural base that carries the load and drains. A thin bedding course of coarse sand or clean chip screenings goes on top of it to set the pavers level. Using deep loose sand as the whole base is the single most common failure: it cannot be compacted to carry load, so the surface ruts and settles. Never use fine mason sand or play sand as bedding.
