Plywood Calculator for Sheets and Roof Sheathing

A plywood calculator on this page counts sheets. A 40 by 20 foot wall, no openings, 4 by 8 sheets, 10 percent waste, is 28 sheets. The same plan as roof sheathing at 6 in 12 is 31 sheets. OSB uses the same division. This page does not print a panel price.

How the Plywood Calculator Counts Sheets

Divide the area by the sheet. On a roof, stretch the plan area by the slope factor first.

4 by 8 and 10 percent are the numbers in the boxes. Rise is used only in roof mode. OSB is the same sheet math. No thickness is selected.

Plan area 800.0 square feet, openings 0.0, net 800.0. Flat area, so the slope factor is 1. Sheet is 32.0 square feet. Bare sheets 25.00. After 10.0 percent waste, order 28 sheets.

Important: waste and pitch are typed

This Plywood Calculator Is a Sheet Count

Studs on the same wall live on the stud calculator. Studs, plates, and a sheet line together live on the lumber calculator. Rafter length lives on the rafter calculator. Roofing squares, which are a hundred square feet of roof, live on the roofing squares calculator. This plywood calculator is the panel count. It is not those other counts.

Pitch as a rise and a run, drawn out, is the roof pitch calculator. This page only needs the rise per 12 so the slope factor can move. It does not replace that pitch page.

Worked wall and worked roof

Wall or floor: 40 feet by 20 feet is 800 square feet. No openings. A 4 by 8 sheet is 32 square feet. 800 divided by 32 is 25 sheets before waste. Ten percent is 27.5, which rounds up to 28 sheets. That is the plywood calculator on a flat surface. An OSB calculator is the same division. The name on the unit changes. The area does not.

Roof sheathing: the same 40 by 20 is the plan, not the slope. Rise 6 in 12. The factor is the square root of 1 plus 0.5 squared, which is 1.118. Sloped area is 894.4 square feet. Ten percent waste rounds the order to 31 sheets. Type the openings if a chimney or a skylight comes out of the field. This page will not guess them.

How should you write the sheet order?

  1. Length, width, and whether the surface is a wall, a floor, or a roof.
  2. Openings in square feet, typed, including zero.
  3. Sheet size. 4 by 8 is the box. Another size is allowed.
  4. On a roof, the rise per 12, and the slope factor that follows.
  5. Waste percent, labeled as typed.
  6. Sheet count. No thickness, and no price.

What the Sheet Count Leaves Out

Layout waste is not the same as a percent. A sheet that has to land on a stud, or a roof sheet that has to break on a rafter, can use more than the division. This plywood calculator rounds the area up. It does not draw the seams. If the crew staggers joints, type a higher waste and say that you typed it.

No span table was fetched, so this page does not say 7/16, 1/2, or 5/8. It does not say which panel stamp matches a rafter spacing. The rafter calculator is the stick length. The panel rating is the stamp on the unit you buy. Leaving thickness off is deliberate.

H-clips, nails, and edge gaps were not fetched. OSB and plywood are treated as the same square footage because a sheet of either one covers the area you typed. They are not treated as the same product. Price was not fetched. Use this plywood calculator when the question is how many sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the plywood calculator count sheets?

Area is length times width, minus openings you type. A 4 by 8 sheet is 32 square feet unless you type another size. Sheets are the area divided by the sheet, times waste, rounded up. A 40 by 20 foot wall with no openings and 10 percent waste is 28 sheets.

Does the plywood calculator cover roof sheathing and OSB?

Yes, as a mode, not as a second page. Roof mode multiplies the plan area by the slope factor, the square root of 1 plus rise-over-12 squared. A 6 in 12 roof on that 40 by 20 plan is 31 sheets at 10 percent waste. OSB uses the same division. Thickness is not chosen here.

What thickness of plywood should I buy?

This plywood calculator does not say. No span rating was fetched. The sheet count is area. The thickness is the drawing or the panel stamp, not a default on this page.

Is this the lumber calculator?

No. The lumber calculator counts studs, plates, and sheets on a wall frame. The stud calculator is the stud line. The rafter calculator is the rafter line. This plywood calculator is the sheet count for a wall, a floor, or a roof you measure.
