Square Yard Calculator for Length Times Width

A square yard calculator on this page divides square feet by 9. A room 12 feet by 15 feet is 180 square feet, which is 20 square yards. Add a second area if the job has two rectangles. This page does not print a carpet price or a sod price.

How the Square Yard Calculator Divides by 9

Get square feet first. Square yards are that number divided by 9.

12 by 15 feet is the example in the boxes. Waste starts at zero. The second area is blank until you need it.

180.00 square feet before waste. Second area is blank. After 0.0 percent, 180.00 square feet, which is 20.000 square yards and 16.7225 square meters.

This Square Yard Calculator Is Not a Unit Converter

If you already have square yards and want square meters only, use the square yards to square meters converter. It multiplies by 0.8361274 and does not measure a room. This square yard calculator starts from the sides. Square feet of an odd floor plan, without the yard step, are the square footage calculator. Volume, which is a third dimension, is the cubic yard calculator.

Sod that is ordered by the yard of area, not by the cubic yard of soil, is the sod calculator. Tile that is ordered by the piece is the tile calculator. Come here when the supplier asked for square yards and you have a length and a width.

Worked room

Length 12 feet. Width 15 feet. The product is 180 square feet. Divide by 9 and the square yard calculator prints 20 square yards. Times 0.8361274, that is 16.7225 square meters. The factor is the one printed on the sister converter, not a new measurement. Waste is zero in the example. Ten percent, if you type it, is 22 square yards, because 180 times 1.10 is 198, and 198 divided by 9 is 22.

How should you write the area?

  1. Each side, and whether it was feet, inches, or yards.
  2. A second rectangle, or a note that there was only one.
  3. Waste percent, labeled as typed, or zero.
  4. Square feet before the division.
  5. Square yards after dividing by 9.
  6. Square meters from 0.8361274, and no price.

What the Area Leaves Out

An L-shaped room is two rectangles, which is why the second row exists. A curve, a bay, and a closet that is not a rectangle are not drawn here. Break those into rectangles yourself, or use the square footage page for a plan you already added up, then divide by 9. This page will not guess the odd piece.

Pattern match, seam direction, and a roll width are not in the division. Ten percent is only an example in the paragraph above. The box starts at zero so a bare room is not padded. If the goods are sold by the square yard and the installer wants extra, type the extra.

Inches are converted by dividing by 12 before the area is taken. Yards are converted by multiplying by 3. Mixing a side in inches with a side in feet is allowed because each side has its own unit. Check that you did not leave a side on the wrong unit. No price per square yard was fetched.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the square yard calculator convert feet?

Multiply length by width in feet, then divide by 9. A 12 by 15 foot area is 180 square feet, which is 20 square yards. One yard is 3 feet, so one square yard is 9 square feet. That is the definition used here.

Is this the square yards to square meters converter?

No. That page multiplies a square-yard number you already have by 0.8361274. This square yard calculator starts from length and width, adds a second area if you type one, and applies waste. Square meters on this page use the same 0.8361274 factor and link to that converter.

Can I add two rooms?

Yes. The second length and width are optional. Leave them blank and only the first rectangle counts. Waste, if you type it, applies to the total square feet before the division by 9.

Does the square yard calculator price carpet or sod?

No. It prints square yards, square feet, and square meters. Sod quantity is the sod calculator. Cubic yards of material are the cubic yard calculator. Square feet of a floor plan are the square footage calculator. None of those prices are printed here.

Get the Yards, Then Price the Goods Elsewhere

Nine square feet is one square yard. A price is a different page.
