What Will Salt Cost This Household?

Salt use is hardness times water use, divided by how efficiently the valve is set. Bag price is whatever the store charges.

If the test is in ppm, divide by 17.1. The hardness converter does that.

75 is the usual residential planning figure. Raise it for heavy laundry or long showers.

Enter the shelf price you actually pay. The $8 default is only a placeholder.

📋 Important: All calculator results are ballpark estimates

Salt figures use the same dose-versus-capacity table as the regeneration calculator on this site. They are planning estimates. The default bag price is a placeholder you should replace with the local shelf price. They are not a quote and they do not include delivery.

How Annual Salt Cost Is Calculated

The dose decides the bill

A softener regenerates by washing the resin with a brine. More salt per cubic foot of resin restores more capacity, but the curve flattens. The table below is the same planning table used on the water softener regeneration calculator.

Salt per cu ftGrains per cu ftCharacter
4 lb16,000Very efficient
6 lb20,000Efficient
8 lb24,000Balanced (default)
10 lb27,000High capacity
12 lb30,000Near maximum
15 lb32,000Nameplate / maximum

Running at 15 lb per cubic foot to chase the nameplate rating nearly doubles salt for a capacity gain that is much smaller. Most residential valves are happier at 6 to 10 lb, regenerating a bit more often.

What this cost does not include

Salt is the repeating purchase. It is not the whole cost of owning a softener. Regeneration also sends water to the drain, the valve uses a little electricity, and resin eventually needs replacement, sooner on chlorinated water or on a well with iron. Installed price is a separate question. Use the water softener cost calculator for equipment and labor, and the installation cost guide for what changes the labor line. Salt type, pellets versus crystals versus potassium chloride, is covered in the salt types comparison.

Why dealers should show the salt line

A homeowner comparing two grain sizes is usually comparing equipment prices. The salt line is what they will pay every year after the install. Putting pounds and bags on the proposal, next to a salt-delivery or service visit, is also how a water treatment dealer stays in the basement often enough to catch a salt bridge, a failed injector or a resin bed that is past its life. Size the unit first with the sizing calculator so the salt figure is for a unit that can actually keep up.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does water softener salt cost per year?

It depends on hardness, how many people use water, the salt dose setting, and the price of a bag where you buy it. A family of four on 15 grains-per-gallon water with a 48,000 grain softener at an 8 pound per cubic foot dose uses on the order of 40 pounds of salt a regeneration and regenerates about weekly, which is several hundred pounds a year. At a planning price of $8 for a 40 pound bag that is a few bags a month, not a fixed national bill. Enter your hardness, unit size and local bag price to get a figure for your house.

How many bags of salt does a water softener use?

Bag count is annual pounds divided by the bag size, usually 40 or 50 pounds. The pounds come from the resin volume times the salt dose, times how many times the unit regenerates. A harder water or a higher salt dose uses more. A metered valve that regenerates only when capacity is used uses less than a timer valve that regenerates on a calendar whether the resin is exhausted or not.

Does a higher salt dose soften more water?

Yes, but the extra capacity is not proportional to the extra salt. At about 6 to 8 pounds of salt per cubic foot, standard resin delivers roughly 20,000 to 24,000 grains per cubic foot. At 15 pounds per cubic foot it reaches the 32,000 grain nameplate and uses nearly twice the salt for a much smaller gain in capacity. Efficient settings cost less per year and regenerate a little more often.

Does iron change how much salt a softener uses?

Dissolved iron and manganese use softening capacity. The usual allowance is 4 grains per gallon for every 1 ppm of either metal, added to the hardness before you calculate grain load. One ppm of iron on 15 gpg water behaves like 19 gpg, so the unit regenerates sooner and burns more salt. Above about 3 ppm of iron, a softener is the wrong primary treatment and an iron filter should go ahead of it.

Is potassium chloride more expensive than salt?

Potassium chloride is sold as an alternative regenerant for people who need to limit sodium or who cannot discharge sodium brine. It typically costs several times as much per bag as sodium chloride and is slightly less efficient, so the valve dose is often raised. This calculator prices whatever bag cost you enter. If you switch regenerants, change the price per bag and confirm the dose with the valve manual.

Why is my softener using more salt than the calculator says?

The usual reasons are a hardness setting higher than the real water, a salt dose left at the factory maximum, a timer valve regenerating on a schedule instead of on demand, a leak or a running toilet that the softener treats as household use, or iron fouling that has cut the resin's real capacity. Check the programmed hardness against a current test before you buy a larger unit.

Salt Delivery Is a Service Plan, Not a Favor

Put annual salt, the regeneration interval and the next service visit on the same customer record as the proposal, so the bags and the checkups do not depend on someone remembering.
