Senior Infrastructure Architect / DevOps Engineer
SubcontractorHub is a fast-growing SaaS platform serving the solar energy industry. We power the full project lifecycle — from sales proposals and financing to design, permitting, project management, and post-installation monitoring — for 500+ contractor organizations across the United States.
Having established itself as the technology leader in its industry, SubcontractorHub is now preparing its systems for aggressive scale. We need someone who can lead the evolution from manually provisioned cloud resources to a fully codified, scalable, secure, and cost-efficient infrastructure — while keeping the platform running without disruption for every one of our tenants.
You will be the first dedicated infrastructure hire and the primary owner of SubcontractorHub's cloud infrastructure, platform reliability, and operational efficiency. You will architect, build, and operate the infrastructure the platform runs on, and guide the backend engineering team through the changes needed to support a modern infrastructure posture.
What you'll own
- Infrastructure architecture (primary): define and implement the target-state cloud architecture. Translate the current manually provisioned AWS environment into Infrastructure as Code. Design for multi-tenant isolation, horizontal scalability, disaster recovery, and cost efficiency. Own the infrastructure roadmap.
- DevOps and platform engineering: build and improve the CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, and developer tooling that let a 50+ person engineering team ship safely and frequently. Introduce environment promotion, automated rollback, and deployment observability.
- Backend systems guidance: when infrastructure changes require application-level adaptation, either implement the changes directly, build a working example that proves the pattern and guide the backend team through the full rollout, or provide precise technical guidance — so the platform keeps operating without disruption.
Tech stack
- Cloud: AWS — ECS Fargate, RDS MariaDB, S3, ElastiCache Redis, ALB, Route 53, CloudFront, IAM, VPC, SQS, plus GuardDuty and WAF
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions → Docker → ECR → ECS
- Monitoring: Datadog (APM, infrastructure, logs, database monitoring) and AWS CloudWatch
- Backend: PHP / Laravel, MariaDB, Redis
- Frontend: Angular
What we're looking for
- 5+ years in infrastructure engineering, DevOps, or platform engineering, including at least 3 years in a senior or architect capacity.
- Deep hands-on AWS experience: ECS/Fargate, RDS, S3, VPC, IAM, ALB, CloudFront, Secrets Manager, SQS, Route 53.
- Containerized deployments (Docker, ECS or EKS) and CI/CD pipeline design, including environment promotion and deployment safety.
- Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred, or equivalent): modules, remote state, workspaces, CI/CD integration, and migrating manually provisioned environments to IaC.
- Backend development experience — application architecture, connection management, caching integration, queue patterns, environment configuration in containerized deployments, and health checks. PHP/Laravel is a strong plus.
- Operating and optimizing relational databases at scale: replication topologies, connection pooling, parameter tuning, backup and recovery, and partitioning strategies.
- Security-first mindset: IAM least-privilege, network segmentation, secrets management, encryption, WAF, and identity management.
- Monitoring and observability platforms — Datadog preferred.
- Clear, precise written communication.
