HVAC Job Description Template: What You Type
An HVAC job description template is the posting you fill in before anyone applies. You type the summary, the duties, the requirements, the schedule, and your own pay range. This sheet does not print a wage.

Owners searching for an HVAC job description want a blank they can copy, print, or download. The only math is a count of lines that have text. Pay stays whatever you typed, including blank.

How an HVAC Job Description Stays Off the Salary Page
An HVAC job description is the posting. The salary page is the handbook wage. They are not the same sheet. The Bureau of Labor Statistics handbook, fetched the day this page was written, says the May 2025 median for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers was $61,010 a year, or $29.33 an hour. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $40,050. The highest 10 percent earned more than $95,210. Those figures stay on this paragraph. They are not written into the pay boxes.
Quick Answer
An HVAC job description template is a blank the owner fills: role, duties, requirements, schedule, tools, vehicle, and a pay range the owner types. The handbook median is $61,010 a year as of May 2025. That median is not the number in the pay boxes.
| Page | What it holds | What it does not hold |
|---|---|---|
| This HVAC job description | The posting you type, including a pay range you type | A wage this site invented |
| Salary guide and calculator | Handbook wages and a model you run | The posting itself |
| Recruit guide | How you find people | The blank you hand a candidate |
State and metro wages stay on the HVAC technician salary guide. A model you run yourself is the HVAC technician salary calculator. How a shop finds applicants is how to recruit HVAC technicians. How someone enters the trade is how to become an HVAC technician. Do not paste the median into the pay boxes and call it your offer.
What the Handbook Says the Work Is
The same handbook says these workers install, maintain, and repair heating, ventilation, cooling, and refrigeration systems. The duty list on the page is seven lines: install, maintain, and repair HVACR systems; install electrical components and wiring; inspect and test systems and components; discuss malfunctions with customers; repair or replace worn or defective parts; recommend maintenance; and keep records of work performed. The button copies those seven lines into the duties box. You can delete any line that is not this job.
The handbook also says some technicians focus on installing while others primarily repair and maintain. That is why the role menu has install and service. It does not write a second duty list. An apprentice label matches the handbook sentence that an apprenticeship usually lasts several years, with paid on-the-job training and some technical instruction each year. Newly hired technicians typically start with basic tasks, such as insulating refrigerant lines or cleaning furnaces. This page does not print a starting percent of the median. No such percent was on the handbook page fetched today.
Programs generally last from 6 months to 2 years and lead to a certificate or an associate's degree. The quick-facts table lists a postsecondary nondegree award, no related work experience, and long-term on-the-job training. About 440,900 people held these jobs in 2025. Employment is projected to grow 11 percent from 2025 to 2035, a change of 48,200, with about 40,600 openings a year.
What Should an HVAC Job Description Include?
Seven lines keep the posting from borrowing a wage this page did not type, and from turning a handbook duty into a promise about your truck.
- Pick install, service, or apprentice. The handbook distinguishes installers from people who primarily repair. It does not print three different wage tables for those labels.
- Write the summary in your words. Name residential or commercial only if that is the work.
- Use the handbook duty list or replace it. Do not leave a duty you do not assign.
- Type requirements you actually use. The handbook says technicians may need a driver's license, and that some states and localities require a license. It does not name your state's test.
- Type certifications you require. The handbook says EPA requires nearly all technicians who handle refrigerant to be certified, and that certification requires passing an exam. EPA's Section 608 page, fetched the same day, says the program prohibits intentional venting of ozone-depleting refrigerants and their substitutes, such as HFCs, while maintaining, servicing, repairing, or disposing of equipment. This sheet does not print a certification type the EPA page did not list.
- Type the schedule, the on-call rule, the tools, and the vehicle. The handbook says most technicians work full time, schedules may include evenings or weekends, and they may be on call during peak seasons. It does not print your rotation or your truck policy.
- Type a pay range only if you are ready to publish one. Leave both boxes blank if you are not. The count of filled lines is not a wage.
After someone is hired, the visit record is a different blank: the HVAC service ticket template. The job in the system of record stays on SubcontractorHub for HVAC. SubcontractorHub is an all-in-one sales and project management platform for solar, roofing, and HVAC contractors. It does not set technician pay.
HVAC interview questions are not this sheet. A posting tells a candidate what the job is. An interview asks what the person has done. This run does not publish an interview page. The steps around finding people stay on the recruit guide linked above.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an HVAC job description template?
An HVAC job description template is a blank posting the owner fills in: role, summary, duties, requirements, certifications, schedule, on-call, tools, vehicle, and a pay range the owner types. This sheet does not print a wage.
Does this HVAC job description print a pay figure?
No. The pay boxes start empty. The Bureau of Labor Statistics handbook, fetched the day this page was written, reports a May 2025 median of $61,010 a year, or $29.33 an hour, for heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers. That median is not typed into the pay boxes.
How does an install tech differ from a service tech on this sheet?
The handbook says some technicians focus on installing HVACR systems while others primarily repair and maintain them. This sheet lets you label the role. It does not invent a separate duty list for each label.
What does the handbook say about an apprentice?
The handbook says some technicians train through an apprenticeship, which usually lasts several years and includes paid on-the-job training plus some technical instruction. Newly hired technicians typically work alongside experienced technicians and begin with basic tasks such as insulating refrigerant lines or cleaning furnaces. This sheet does not print an apprentice wage percent.
Are HVAC interview questions on this sheet?
No. This page is the posting. Interview questions are a different search, and this page does not publish them. Hiring steps that sit next to a posting are on the recruit guide.
Keep the Posting With the Hire
The role, the duties you kept, and the pay range you typed belong on the job record before the first day.
