HVAC Interview Questions: The Score You Type
HVAC interview questions on this sheet are for the owner or the service manager who is hiring. You pick the role, you hear the answer, and you type a score from 1 to 5. The sheet does not print a wage and it does not tell you to hire.

Book a DemoRate HVAC Interview Questions by Role
The same four categories sit on every role: technical, safety, customer, and behavioral. The words change so a dispatcher is not scored as if they were on a roof.
Technical
Walk through the last no-cool call you diagnosed. What did you check, and in what order?
A good answer names the complaint, then airflow and the thermostat, then power, then pressures with a reason. It does not stop at adding refrigerant.
Safety
Before you open a condensing unit or an air handler, what do you do so it cannot start while your hands are in it?
A good answer describes killing power and checking that the circuit is dead before the panel comes off. It does not skip straight to a part.
Customer
A homeowner is angry about the invoice. What do you say, and what do you refuse to promise?
A good answer restates the work that was done, does not invent a discount, and names who at the shop can change the bill.
Behavioral
Tell me about a call where your first idea was wrong. What check changed it?
A good answer names the equipment, the first guess, the reading that contradicted it, and what was written on the ticket.

How HVAC Interview Questions Stay Off the Posting
HVAC interview questions ask what a person has already done. A posting tells them what the job is. Those are different papers. The blank you publish is the HVAC job description template. How a shop finds applicants is how to recruit HVAC technicians. This scorecard is the conversation in between. It does not replace either page.
Quick Answer
HVAC interview questions here are a 1 to 5 scorecard for the owner. Pick service, install, apprentice, CSR or dispatcher, or comfort advisor. Read what a good answer covers, type your score, and copy or print the sheet. No wage and no passing score are printed.
| Page | What it holds | What it does not hold |
|---|---|---|
| This scorecard | Questions by role, and a 1 to 5 score you type | A wage, a pass rate, or a hire command |
| Job description | The posting, including a pay range you type | The interview itself |
| Recruit guide | Where applicants come from, and a ride-along outline | This question bank |
Someone searching HVAC technician interview questions may be the person who wants the job. The service list still shows what an owner listens for. The sheet is written for the person who will make the offer. Pay the shop is willing to publish stays on the job description. No wage was fetched for this page, so none is printed here.
What a Good Answer Covers
Each row already says what a useful answer includes. You are listening for a sequence the person has used, not for a price they were not given.
- Pick one role. Do not score a dispatcher on a gauge question.
- Ask the question as written. The note box is what you heard.
- Score 1 to 5 only if you heard an answer. The average uses only the scores you typed.
- Compare two people only on the questions you asked both of them.
- After a hire, the visit record is the HVAC service ticket template. The job record stays on SubcontractorHub for HVAC.
What Should HVAC Interview Questions Leave Out?
This page is not legal advice. Follow the employment law that applies to the shop. EEOC's page on prohibited employment policies, fetched the day this page was written, says it is illegal to discriminate against an applicant or employee because of race, color, religion, sex (including transgender status, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information. It also says it is illegal to retaliate because a person complained about discrimination, filed a charge, or participated in an investigation or lawsuit.
The same page says pre-employment information should be limited to what is essential for determining if a person is qualified, and that race, sex, national origin, age, and religion are irrelevant in that determination. Employers are explicitly prohibited from making pre-offer inquiries about disability. Inquiries that may indicate race, sex, national origin, disability status, age, religion, color, or ancestry should generally be avoided, and employers should not ask for a photograph before an offer is made and accepted. If a test is used, the page says it must be necessary and related to the job. This scorecard is not that test. How someone enters the trade is how to become an HVAC technician.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this scorecard hold?
HVAC interview questions here are a bank the owner rates, by role, from 1 to 5. The roles are service technician, install technician, apprentice, CSR or dispatcher, and comfort advisor. The sheet does not print a passing score and it does not print a wage.
Are HVAC interview questions the same as a job description?
No. The job description is the posting you hand a candidate. HVAC interview questions ask what the person has done. Pay the owner is willing to publish stays on the job description. This scorecard does not type a wage.
Does this page tell me whom to hire?
No. It averages the 1 to 5 scores you typed for the role you picked. It does not set a cutoff, a pass rate, or a ranking against other candidates. The hire is yours.
Which questions should an owner avoid?
EEOC's prohibited-practices page says pre-employment information should be limited to what is essential for determining if a person is qualified, and that race, sex, national origin, age, and religion are irrelevant in that determination. Employers are explicitly prohibited from making pre-offer inquiries about disability, and should not ask for a photograph before an offer is made and accepted. This sheet is not legal advice.
Do HVAC technician interview questions use the same bank?
Yes. HVAC technician interview questions sit on the service-technician role of this same sheet. Install, apprentice, CSR or dispatcher, and comfort advisor are separate lists so a dispatcher is not scored on a gauge reading.
